Biografia

After winning the 1964 AAU title, Toby Gibson boxed for the US at the 1964 Olympics, and then turned professional. He had a short pro career, fighting only in 1965, winning all four of his bouts. He left boxing to attend Eastern Washington University and later earned a law degree. He then became a deputy prosecutor in Spokane County, the first black to be appointed to that position. Gibson later ran for a Superior Court judgeship, but was defeated, and then left Spokane, opening a law practice in Seattle in 1976. Two years later he was disbarred for misappropriating more than $25,000 in clients’ trust funds. In 1980 Gibson was convicted in Alameda County, California of extortion and robbery stemming from the armed robbery of an Oakland law firm, and he spent almost seven years in prison. He died in 1993 from complications relating to Graves Disease.
