Biografia

Sabine Bau was one of the most successful German female foil fencers ever, although she stood a bit in the shadow of her teammates Anja Fichtel-Mauritz and Zita-Eva Funkenhauser. In Seoul she won the foil team gold together with them and Annette Klug and Christiane Weber. Bau also fought in the individual final in 1988 against Fichtel-Mauritz but lost, 8-5. In the following three Olympic Games Bau placed seventh in individual foil in 1992 and was eliminated in the quarter-finals in 1996 and 2000. With the foil team she claimed one more silver and two more bronze medals. Bau collected four gold medals (one individual / three team), four silver medals (all individual), and five bronze medals (one individual / four team) at the World Championships. Her collection was completed by several European and domestic podiums. She belonged to the Fencing Club Tauberbischofsheim that dominated fencing for decades in Germany.

Bau later studied medicine and became an orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine, at the Ludwig-Haus in Würzburg. She is also engaged in various social institutions (e.g., the children project "Auryn" for mentally ill children). In 2000, she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf by the German Sports Association.
