Biografia

Dick Hanley attended the University of Michigan, and won four AAU titles – indoor 220 free in 1956, and three outdoors – 1956 100 free, and 1957 100 and 200 free. He also won the NCAA 220 freestyle title in 1959. In March 1957 he also broke the world record for the 200 metre and 220 yard freestyle at a meet in Minneapolis. The 100m freestyle final at the 1956 Olympics was dominated by the Australians and the Americans, and as Australia swept the medals, the U.S. filled the next three places, with Dick Hanley finishing fifth. After their success in the individual sprint, the Australian victory in the relay came as no surprise, but Dick Hanley swam the lead-off leg for the U.S. team which took the silver medals.
