Richard CARAPAZ

As a child in a small village near Tulcan, Ecuador, Richard Carapaz saw bicycles merely as a mode of transport, far from considering a cycling career. Shouldering responsibilities beyond his age, he managed family livestock while pursuing his education.

A salvaged BMX bike, a gift from his father, initially lacking tires, ignited a destiny and passion that would extend beyond the limits of his village and country.

Richard Carapaz: Rise to prominence and Olympic glory

Carapaz started his career with amateur teams in Ecuador, later moving to Colombia and Spain. His journey led him to the Movistar Team, initially as a trainee and eventually signing as a pro for the 2017 season. Two years later, he made history as the first Ecuadorian to claim a Grand Tour title with his victory at the 2019 Giro d'Italia.

At Tokyo 2020, Carapaz added an Olympic chapter to his story, securing Ecuador's first-ever cycling gold in the road race at the Games. He finished over a minute ahead of the competition, showcasing his climbing prowess. The victory came just a week after a podium finish at the Tour de France.
