Biografia

A clinical forward with a knack for scoring crucial goals and capable of doubling up as a midfielder, Indian hockey superstar Rani Rampal is considered one of the best women hockey players in the world.

Now the captain of the women’s Indian hockey team, Rani Rampal led a young squad to a fourth-place finish at Tokyo 2020, with only a narrow loss to Great Britain stopping Team India from winning an Olympic bronze medal.

It was, nevertheless, the women’s team’s highest finish at an Olympic Games in just its third appearance.

Rani Rampal’s international debut came in 2008 when, as a 14-year-old at the Olympic qualifiers, she became the youngest hockey player India had ever fielded.

Such was the promise she offered that the teenager made her World Cup debut in 2010 - the youngest to do so for India aged 15 - and scored five of the seven goals India netted in the competition.

And to think a few years prior, she was growing amid the shackles of poverty in Shahbad, a village nestled in the state of Haryana where her father earned a livelihood as a cart-puller.
