As an unknown 21-year-old Lancelot Stafford won both standing jumps at the 1908 British Olympic trials and set a new British record in each event. It was only then that he decided to join a club, the London AC. He did not take part in the 1912 Olympics, but won the Amateur Field Events Association long jump title in 1913. During World War I he was Mentioned in Despatches while serving as a captain the Artists Rifles. He worked for Phoenix Assurance for over 30 years an at the time of his retirement in 1935 was area manager for Surrey.
