Joe Barile had a short international luge career with the 1988 Winter Olympics the highlight of his career. He slid for six years internationally, mostly in doubles with Steven Maher. He worked at the time as a carpenter, and became quite well known in the Adirondacks. Barile later developed The Whiteface Lodge, a classic camp with the rustic opulence of the Adirondack Great Camps of the early 20th centry. The lodge is an 85-suite resort modeled after the mountain retreats of the barons of the Gilded Age. Barile is the owner of The Whiteface Lodge, and its parent company, the Lake Placid Group.
