John Burton started whitewater paddling in the mountains of North Carolina. When he went to Dartmouth, Burton met some other paddlers and started competing internationally in 1967, notably at the 1967 ad 1969 World Championships. He and Tom Southworth qualified for the 1972 Olympics in C-2 slalom. Burton was 1971 US Champion in C-1 slalom and he and Southworth won the 1970 US title in C-2. At the time of the 1972 Olympics Burton worked as a securities analyst for Philadelphia National Bank.
