John BOYAGIS

A lieutenant in the intelligence corps, John Boyagis won his first British Army skiing titles (slalom and combined) in 1948, and in 1949 and 1950 completed a clean sweep of all three titles (slalom, downhill and combined). Although born in India, he started skiing at the age of eight, when he lived in Austria. Having represented Great Britain at the 1948 Olympics, Boyagis was appointed team captain in 1950, when he was runner-up to Stuart Parkinson in the combined event at the British Championships. Boyagis also won that year’s British Services’ Championship, which he retained in 1951 and 1952. He won the British downhill and combined titles in 1951, and also won that year’s Roberts of Kandahar Cup. He retained his British combined title in 1952, also successfully defending his Roberts of Kandahar title that year. After the Army, Boyagis worked for a London oil company and then became an insurance broker and consultant. He was a member of the Kandahar Club for over 60 years, and served as both chairman and president.
