George Kojac was the son of Ukranian immigrants, and while attending DeWitt Clinton High School, he learned to swim in New York's East River. He set the first of his 23 world records while still in high school and won AAU titles in both freestyle and backstroke events. Kojac attended Rutgers and never lost a race while there, but he missed the 1932 Olympics because of his studies at Columbia Medical School. However the Olympic backstroke record he set at the 1928 Games was the only Olympic record to survive the 1932 Games.
