Franz Keller started his career as a ski jumper and won the 1966 German Championships. He then switched to Nordic combined and won a silver medal at the 1966 World Championships in Oslo. In 1967, he won the Nordic combined event at Holmenkollen, leading up to his gold medal in Nordic combined at the Grenoble Olympics, for which he was elected Sportsman of the Year in West Germany. From 1970-73 he won the West German national title four times in a row. In 1973 Keller received the Holmenkollen Medal (with Einar Bergsland and Ingolf Mork).
