Ernst Knoll wrestled in both freestyle and Greco-Roman style at the Olympic Games. At Mexico City in 1968, he was eliminated in both styles after the first rounds of the middleweight class. In 1972, at München, he competed only as a freestyler in the light-heavyweight division, but was again eliminated early. In 1967, Knoll had his best international finish when he was fourth at the European Championships. From 1964-72 he won nine West German national titles.
Knoll came to West Germany as a young boy with his family, immediately after World War II, having been displaced from the Sudetenland. Until his early death at the age of 56, he owned a small metalworking company in his hometown Eppelheim.
