Émile Demangel competed at both the 1906 and 1908 Olympic Games as a cyclist. After the London Olympics, he won the 1908 Amateur World Championship in the sprint and also won the Grand Prix de Paris that year. It was quite a year for him, as on 24 August he also broke the world record for the paced 500 metre time trial, recording 34 2/5. Demangel’s tombstone in Xertigny, where he lived his later years and died, is decorated with the Olympic Rings, and a street in Xertigny is named for him.
