Biografia

After winning the mile and the steeplechase at the 1918 London AC Schools' meeting, Evelyn Montague went up to Oxford and won the cross-country race against Cambridge (1919-20) and the 3 miles (1920-21). As a 20-year-old he finished fourth in the mile and second in the 4 miles at the 1920 AAA Championships and was invited to run in the Olympic 5K, but was unable to accept. From 1921 he concentrated on the steeplechase and finished second at the AAA Championships (1921, 1924-25). After spending two years as a journalist in Chile he returned home in 1928 and had one final season on the track in 1930, when he finished third in the Northern Counties steeplechase. He was the grandson of CP Scott, the legendary editor of the Manchester Guardian, and served as the athletics correspondent of the paper from 1926-47 and he was appointed the London editor in 1945. A founding member of the Achilles Club, he was also the joint organizer, with FAM Webster, of the first AAA Summer Schools at Loughborough.

Personal Bests: 3 miles – 14:45.0 (1920); 3000S – 9:48.0 (1924).
