Russ Nichols was a whitewater canoeist, who competed for the Wisconsin Hoofers Outing Club. He made the 1972 US Olympic team by winning the US Championships in C-2S with John Evans. Nichols and Evans also competed together at the 1973 World Championships, placing 12th. Nichols graduated from Colgate University in 1969 with a degree in physics and later earned a graduate degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1971. Nichols later worked as a film and videotape producer.
