In 2005, Bettina Gärtz, later Mrs. Gärtz-Jahn, in an interview with the German newspaper "Taz", explained that she had voluntarily taken performance-enhancing drugs, and felt that otherwise she would not have reached the top world level. Her trainer, Mr. Eidam, had explained to her the complexity of this decision in an intensive conversation and discussion.
She placed 7th in the 100 m hurdles at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 1983 she was World Champion and won the European Cup, and placed fourth at the 1982 European Championships. In 1982 and 1983 Gartzw was European Indoor champion, and she won four national titles. In 1985 she set an indoor world record over 60 metres. She was educated as a textile technician, but later managed a branch bank.
