Biografia

Long jump’s loss was sprinting’s gain in the case of India’s Arokia Rajiv, who started out in the former discipline before taking to the track on his coach’s advice. Hailing from a village in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, Arokia has since gone on to win medals of all hues at the Asian Games -  bronze in the 400m at Incheon 2014, silver in the men’s 4x400m relay and the gold in the mixed 4x400m relay at Jakarta 2018.

Arokia Rajiv will be competing in his second Olympics in Tokyo, having participated in the men’s 4x400m relay at the Rio 2016 Games. Along with his fellow relay sprinters Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, Noah Nirmal Tom and Naganathan Pandi, Rajiv will be looking to better his Olympic experience.

In Rio, the men’s 4x400m relay quartet of Rajiv, Muhammed Kunju, Muhammed Anas and Ayyasamy Dharun was disqualified in Heat 2 for faulty exchange of baton between Dharun and Rajiv.

Hailing from a humble background, Rajiv had to make do without shoes when he began running. When he competed at the state level in Tamil Nadu, he had to borrow spikes from a friend.
