As an amateur, Alberto Minetti won the 1979 Settimana Ciclistica Bergamasca and the 1980 Giro delle Regioni, considered an amateur version of the Giro d’Italia. Minetti joined the professional peloton a few months after the Moskva Olympics. He finished 25th in his first important race, the 1981 Milano-Sanremo, in a race won by Fons De Wolf, who had been fourth in the individual road race at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. Minetti then placed 23rd in the 1981 Giro d’Italia. On 10 August 1981 he was the victim of a serious training accident that ended his short career as a cyclist.
