At the age of 17, Stine Lise Hattestad won her first national title in aerials in 1984, and the following seasons she competed in moguls and ballet, winning national titles in both disciplines in the period 1985-87. In her first two World Cup-seasons, 1985 and 1986, she competed in both moguls and ballet, but from 1988 she decided to specialize in moguls, winning her first World Cup competition in Madarao, Japan in February 1988, just two weeks before the Calgary Olympics, where moguls was a demonstration event and where she placed fourth. She continued to do well in the World Cup, and won a bronze medal in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville. In 1993 she had a great season, winning five World Cup competitions and was crowned World Champion in moguls in Altenmarkt, Austria. In 1994 she won the World Cup competition in Hundafjället, Sweden, and four days later was a very popular gold medal winner at the Lillehammer Games. She ended her career after the 1994 season at the age of 27, having won 14 national titles and 10 World cup victories during her 10 years as a freestyle skier. Hattestad studied business economy and later worked as a PR-adviser.
