Sprint canoeist Renate Breuer from Berlin, coached by her husband Hartmut Breuer, burst onto the scene at the 1965 European Championships, winning two bronze medals, in the kayak singles (K1) and the kayak fours (K4). In 1967 Breuer added another bronze in the kayak double (K2) with Roswitha Esser, and a silver in the K4. She won two more silvers in K1 and K4 in 1969.
Breuer also added silver medals in the K4 at the 1966 and 1971 World Championships, and won a gold at the 1970 Worlds in K2 with Esser. At the Olympic Games, she won a silver medal in the K1 in Mexico 1968, and finished fifth with Esser in the K2 at München in 1972. Domestically Breuer won the West German K1 title five years in a row, 1968-72, and in 1967, won the K2 title with Esser.
