बायोग्राफी

Middle-distance runner Paul-Heinz Wellmann had his greatest moment winning the bronze medal in the 1,500 at the 1976 Montréal Games. Four years earlier in München he placed seventh in the 1,500. In both Olympics he started together with his future wife Ellen Tittel-Wellmann, who later married another German middle-distance runner Thomas Wessinghage.

Paul-Heinz Wellmann also finished seventh at the 1971 and 1974 Europeans in the 1,500. He placed second at the 1973 European Cup. At the European Indoors he earned a bronze and two golds with the 4x800 and the 4x4 lap relays in 1971-73. Over 1,500 metres he added a gold medal in 1976 and a silver in 1977. Domestically he claimed eight outdoor and five indoor titles in West Germany in different events.

Wellmann later became a coach and sports administrator with his home club Bayer 04 Leverkusen and was a spokesman for the High Performance Clubs within the German Athletics Association from 2005-10. In 1976, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf.

Personal Bests: 800 – 1:46.7 (1976); 1500 – 3:36.23 (1976).
