Olegario Vázquez studied business administration and later became an entrepreneur and director of several companies, notably the Grupo Empresarial Angeles, Grupo Financiero Multivalores, and Grupo Imagen. As a youth he competed in shooting and tennis, but excelled in shooting, competing at the Olympics four times from 1964-76, always as a rifle shooter.
Vázquez was named as Lifetime Honorary President of Mexican Shooting Federation from 1992. He was Vice-President of the Mexican Sports Confederation from 1983-92, a member of the Mexican Olympic Committee beginning in 1969, and was a long-time President of the International Shooting Sport Federation (1980-). In 1979 he was made President of the Shooting Confederation of the Americas, serving in that role until 2010, after which he was made Honorary President.
Vázquez was co-opted onto the IOC in 1995 and has since served on the following IOC Commissions –Olympic Solidarity (1988-98), New Sources of Financing (1994-97), Enquiry for the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in 2000 (1993), Marketing (appointed 1994), IOC 2002 (1999).
