An allround track and field athlete, and talented hurdler, Leo Mariën collected nine Belgian titles. Apart from three decathlon titles (1958, 1961-62), he won titles in the 110 m hurdles (1961), 400 m hurdles (1959) and the now outmoded 200 m hurdles (1959-61, 1964). In all four events, he also bettered the Belgian record at some point in his career. Internationally, Mariën's performances were modest, with a 14th place in the decathlon at the 1962 Europeans and 18th in the Rome Olympics. Retiring from top level competition in the 1960s, Mariën remained active as a veteran. Through 1990, he won three master titles in the 110 m hurdles, as well as two European titles.
