Lam Jones earned his nickname as a wide receiver for the Texas Longhorns in the late 70s. A teammate's name was also Johnny Jones, so they were called by the names of their hometowns – "Ham" Jones and "Lam" Jones for Lampasas, Texas. Before starting college, Lam Jones had placed fourth in the loom at the 1976 Final Trials, but was nominated for the individual event in Montréal when Houston McTear withdrew because of injury In the Olympic 100 m, Jones finished sixth, but won a gold medal in the relay after running an outstanding second leg. Jones never won a major title, his best finish being second in the 1977 NCAA 100 m. Lam Jones went on to pro football where he became a wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1980-84, after being drafted in the first round. He finished his career with 138 receptions, averaging 16.8 yards/catch. Hampered by injuries, his best year was 1983, when he had 43 catches and 4 touchdowns.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.23 (1976); 200 – 20.67 (1977); 400 – 46.16 (1976).
