Herman Goffberg finished third in the AAU 6 miles in 1942 and 1948, and fourth in the 3 miles in 1944. He was third in the 1948 Olympic Trial 10K. He competed for Eastern Michigan University, Penn State, the Shanahan Catholic Club, the Penn Athletic Club, and the US Coast Guard. At Penn State he helped the Nittany Lions to finish second in the 1941 NCAA cross-country championships, the 1942 IC4A indoor track championships, and the 1942 IC4A outdoor track championships.
Goffberg married Indian-British actress Janine Gray who appeared in numerous movies and television shows, although they divorced after only a few years. Goffberg eventually lived in London where he started out selling cars, but then evolved into an import-export business. Later in life he returned to State College, Pennsylvania, living there in his twilight years, and worked for the track team as a “graduate manager.” Goffberg was also president of the Penn State Varsity “S” Club in 1995.
