Georg Hoffmann, a swimmer and diver from Berlin, won the silver medal in the 100 yard backstroke behind his teammate Walter Brack and ahead of Georg Zacharias. This was the first time the 100 back was swum in Olympic competition as there was no backstroke in 1896 and only a 200 backstroke in 1900. Hoffmann also competed in the 440 yard breaststroke, and finished fourth behind fellow teammates, Zacharias and Brack, and third-placed Jam Handy from Chicago, who later became the last surviving medalist of the 1904 Olympic Games.

Hoffmann also won a silver medal in springboard diving. Two years later in Athina he again won a silver medal as a platform diver, behind his fellow teammate Gottlob Walz. Hoffmann also participated in the 100 metre freestyle in 1906, but was eliminated in the heats.
