Albert “Lal” White’s specialty was riding on grass and cinder tracks, but between 1913-26 he won 15 national titles and competed in four UCI Track Cycling World Championships on cement tracks. His first national title came in 1913 in the tandem, together with his brother. The others came between the wars – three in the quarter mile, one in the mile, four in the 5 miles, four in the 25 miles, and another two in the tandem. His best year was 1920, winning four British Championships. At the 1920 Olympics White fell behind in the team pursuit final, and unintentionally hindered the Italian quartet, who protested. The protest was upheld, giving Italy the gold medal. White won a number of other prestigious races, mostly over the 10-mile distance, including the 1922 Muratti Gold Cup.
