Biographie

Wollert Nygren placed third at 1,500 metres in the 1928 Norwegian Championships and earned a place on the Olympic team for St. Moritz. At the European Championships in Oslo in January, he placed sixth in the overall standing, his best ever international championship result. Two weeks later he did well at the World Championships in Davos, placing fifth in his favorite distance, 1,500 metres, and eighth in the overall standing. Nygren was supposed to be a substitute at the Olympics, but Michael Staksrud was ill after his disappointing 5,000 and Nygren was put onto the 1,500 team, but ended the race in a disappointing 13th position. Nygren had a long speedskating career, skating his last national championship in 1937. His younger brother Hugo Nygren was one of Norway's best speed skating sprinters of the era, winning the 500 metres at the 1929 Norwegian Championships.
