Biographie

The West German field hockey team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics earned a bronze medal by winning the deciding game against Great Britain 3-1. In the semi-finals Germany had lost 0-1 to India. Werner Delmes played for Rot-Weiß Köln domestically and also participated in the 1960 Olympic tournament, where the team finished in seventh place. From 1954-62 Delmes claimed 40 international caps. In 1956 he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, in Germany the highest award by the government.

Delmes later became a sports official in the Deutscher Hockey Bund. He also coached the men’s national team at the 1972 München Games, when the nation won its first ever gold medal in field hockey after defeating Pakistan in the final.
