Walter Edward RED

Known for having one of the shortest names of any Olympian, although his full name was Walter Edward, Ed Red placed three times in the AAU javelin – 1963 (3rd), 1965 (4th), and 1966 (2nd). In 1963-64 he was fourth in the NCAA javelin for Rice, and was Southwest Conference Champion in the javelin for three consecutive years.

Red later earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Arizona State in 1972, and began teaching at the University of Southwest Louisiana, followed by the University of New Mexico, and then Texas A&M. He eventually became a professor at Brigham Young University. He became a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, published three textbooks, and multiple peer-reviewed articles. Red also generated over 30 patents or patent disclosures at BYU. He created two companies and consulted for multiple other firms. Later in life, Red became an adult convert to Mormonism (Church of Latter Day Saints [LDS]), and served a three-year term as an LDS bishop.
