Tomasz Nowak enjoyed a successful amateur boxing career winning approximately 150 of his 180 bouts. A five-time Polish champion (1983-84, 1986-1988), he qualified for all major tournaments. In 1985, he reached the semi-finals of the European Championships, losing to Samson Khachatryan of the USSR but earning a bronze. At the 1986 Worlds, Nowak again reached the semis, but was again halted in that stage, that time by Jésus Sollet (Cuba). At the 1987 Europeans, Nowak was eliminated at the quarter-final stage, a fate he also suffered at the Seoul Olympics. Nowak completed his studies at the University of Physical Education, and briefly tried his handed at coaching, leading the Polish team in 1997. He then returned to university to work as a teacher and completed his PhD (on boxing, of course) in 2002.
