Javelin thrower Silke Renk started for East Germany in 1988 at Seoul coming in fifth, and for reunified Germany in 1992 and 1996. At Barcelona she won the gold medal, in Atlanta she failed to reach the final. In 1990, Renk finished fourth at the European Championships. At the World Championships she won a bronze medal in 1991, placed sixth in 1993 and failed to make the finals in both 1995 and 1997. In East Germany Renk was runner-up at the nationals in 1988-90, while in Germany she won titles in 1992 and 1993, and was runner-up in 1991 and 1996. By profession she was a graduated sports teacher, and she also became vice-president of her home club SV Halle.
