Biographie

Reiner Schilling began wrestling at the age six, and as a 16-year-old, took part in the qualifying tournament for the 1960 Rome Olympics, held in his home town of Tuttlingen, but he did not qualify. In the featherweight class Schilling was German Freestyle Champion in 1963 and 1964 and runner-up in Greco-Roman in 1963. He made the German team for the 1964 Olympic Games after winning qualifying matches against East Germany wrestlers. In Tokyo Schilling won three times, losing on points to the eventual Olympic champion Osuma Watanabe from Japan.

Due to an eye injury in 1965, Schilling had to retire from competition earlier than he had hoped. He later became a successful coach and manager for various German wrestling clubs as well as on a national level.
