At the Olympics, Pierre Durand competed in both eventing and show jumping, over a period of 12 years. Durand was 1962 World Military Champion in eventing. He won a bronze medal in Nations’ Cup jumping at the 1986 World Championships. In show jumping, he was also third in the 1985 World Cup standings, and second in the 1985/86 World Cup League. Unusually, Durand won a silver medal in Nations’ Cup jumping at the 1983 Mediterranean Games in Rabat.
Durand was a career military officer, retiring as a General, after which he became director of the French National Riding School from 1984-88. His son, Pierre Durand, Jr., also competed at two Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in individual jumping at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
