Peter Commette was a Tufts University student when he competed at the 1976 Olympics. Commette was initially a Laser sailor, winning the 1974 World Championship in that class. He started sailing Lasers at the Mantoloking Yacht Club in New Jersey, but the class was not an Olympic class in that era, so Commette raced the Finn class at the 1976 Olympics. Even in college Commette taught sailing at the Bay Head Yacht Club during the summer. At Tufts, he raced on the sailing team, but again had to sail Larks as the Laser was not an approved collegiate class. His Laser career ended in 1980, and he moved on to other boats for a few years, winning a bronze medal at the 1991 Pan American Games in the Snipe Class. Commette continued to be involved in sailing, coaching, teaching, and writing for various magazines.
