Biographie

Óscar Sánchez was an inside forward who played for Guatemala at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. Sánchez later played in World Cup Qualifying tournaments in 1978, 1982, and 1990. He started his senior career in 1973 with Ases del Minar, but joined Comunicaciones in 1974. He led them to five league titles in 12 years and led the league in scoring four times. Sánchez later played for Municipal, Aurora FC, Galcasa, Tipografía Nacional, Cobán, Izabal JC, and Deportivo Escuintla, retiring in 1992.

From 1974-92, Sánchez played in 609 league matches, scoring 244 goals, which remained the league's career record until 2006. In a 1999 poll by IFFHS (International Federation of Football History and Statistics) Sánchez was voted the greatest Guatemalan footballer of all-time, and one of the 20 best to ever play in CONCACAF. After his playing retirement, he became a coach, managing Comunicaciones and Jalapa in the top division, and several lower divisions clubs.
