Mateja SVET

Mateja Svet made her World Cup début in the 1984 season, and competed in the Sarajevo Olympics. A slalom and giant slalom expert, she broke through two years later with her first World Cup win. She won three medals at the 1987 World Championships. In Crans-Montana, she gained a silver in the giant slalom, and bronze in the Super G and slalom. In the following season, she collected the giant slalom World Cup with three season victories, and placed second to Vreni Schneider in the Olympic giant slalom. Her biggest success came the following year in Vail, when she won the slalom at the World Championships, also adding a giant slalom bronze medal. Aged only 22, she retired after the 1990 season, with a total of seven World Cup victories (six in the giant slalom), having placed sixth in the overall World Cup twice (1988, 1989). Named Slovenia's sportswoman of the year seven times in a row (1984-1990) and Yugoslav's sportswoman of the year three times (1986, 1987, and 1989), Mateja Svet currently is a part-time psychology student.
