Biographie

Karen Forkel won the javelin bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and placed sixth four years later in Atlanta. At the World Championships she placed 12th in 1991, won the silver medal two years later, failed in the 1995 qualifying round and placed 12th again in 1999. She won a bronze medal at the 1993 World Cup. In 1990 and 1994 Forkel won a silver medal at the European Championships, and also at the 1993 and 1994 European Cup, placing sixth in 2000. Domestically she was the last East German Champion in 1990, and then in 1991 the first one after German reunification, winning the title again in 1994 and 1996. Forkel was world-ranked in the top 10 eight times between 1989-99, with best placements of 2nd in 1990-91, and 3rd in 1993-94.
