James HAGGARTY

Ice hockey forward James “Jim” Haggarty had been playing with the Port Arthur Bearcats since 1932 when his team was called up to represent Canada at the 1936 Winter Olympics. After winning the silver medal at the tournament he returned to Britain’s Wembley Canadians, who he had joined in September 1935, and played in Britain until the end of the 1938-1939 season. For a time, he was joined in England by fellow Olympic teammate Jakie Nash. He then returned to Canada and began a stint with the Quebec Senior Hockey League’s Montreal Royals that would last until 1950. In the middle, he had five games with the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens at the end of the 1941-1942 season, where he scored one goal. At some point he lost his Olympic medal, but his family received a replacement for it shortly after his 1998 death. He was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, as a member of his Olympic team.
