Biographie

Irene Daw won medals at national, European and World championship level and was involved in shooting, as either competitor or coach for half a century. Her greatest achievements within the sport were a silver medal at the European Championships and a bronze, as part of the British women's air rifle team, at the 1979 World Championships. Daw's only Olympic appearance proved a disappointment. Her personal best would have earned her the gold medal but she could only finish in 20th after a disastrous 2nd round. As her competitive career ended she became involved in coaching. She coached the British junior team and was head coach of the Welsh women's squad at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 and Melbourne in 2006. Daw also took an active role in local politics and served as a Liberal Democrat councilor on Mablethorpe & Sutton Town council. At the time of her death from cancer she was serving as deputy mayor of Mablethorpe & Sutton.
