Hermann Lingnau finished 12th in shot put at the 1960 Roma Olympic Games and 4th at the 1958 European Championships. He won two German championships in 1957 and 1958, adding seven indoor titles. His father Alfred (1896-1980) was a multiple German Champion in several power disciplines such as shot put, discus and stone throw. Hermann later made a career in the administration of his hometown of Frankfurt. From 1972-78 he was city treasurer of Frankfurt and then moved to the board of the bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau from 1979-87. In 1987 Lingnau was dismissed as it was said he preferred to spend his time on the golf course rather than in the office.
