Biographie

After making his début against Wales in 1905, Herbert Smith won all four of his full international caps before making the first of 17 appearances on the English amateur side between 1907 and 1910. He was a dashing left-back with a strong volley, and the powerful use of his left foot was always a feature of his game. Smith attended Oxford County School and Beccles School, and began his playing career with Witney Town FC, winning the Oxfordshire Senior Cup three times in the early 1890’s. He later played for a variety of clubs including Oxford City, Stoke, Derby County and Reading, where he as captain of the professional club. During his time at Oxford City, the club was losing finalists in the 1903 FA Amateur Cup and Smith also represented the South against the North. In 1910 he joined the council of the Oxfordshire FA and he held the office of President from 1919 until his death. All his family shared his love of cricket, and his brother-in-law, Albert Lawton, was captain of Derbyshire for many years.
