Henry Barker placed third in the 1907 AAA steeplechase behind fellow Olympians Joseph English and Arthur Robertson to qualify for the 1908 Olympic Games. As well as competing in the steeplechase, Barker regularly competed in one mile events in the north-west of England. Before turning to track racing Barker raced cross-country, and took part in the National Cross-Country Championship and finished 8th at Leicester in 1901 when Alf Shrubb won the first of his four consecutive titles. He finished 13th when Shrubb won his fourth title, at Wolverhampton in 1904.
