Hans Johnstone’s best finish in Nordic combined at a US Championship was second in 1985, also finishing fourth in 1986. He spent five years on the US Ski Team. Johnstone later settled in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he has become a professional guide and climber. He climbs in the Tetons, Wind Rivers, and Yosemite. He made the first winter ascent of Mount Moran’s South Buttress and Mt. McKinley’s Cassin Ridge, and has served as a guide on Mt. McKinley (Denali). Johnston has also led expeditions to the mountains of Tibet and Pakistan, and made the first ski descents of Hossack-MacGowan Couloir and the East Ridge of the Grand Tetons. He is also the proprietor of the Alpine House Bed & Breakfast in Jackson Hole. His wife, the former Nancy Bell, also skied cross-country for the US at the Olympics.
