George Moore entered pentathlon after a track career at West Point. At the 1948 Olympics, his silver medal came after a second place in riding and a third place in fencing. Moore was in the U.S. Army in airborne and artillery during World War II, participating in the North African and Italian campaigns. His decorations included two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit. After the war, he taught at West Point before retiring in 1965, as a colonel, to enter the computer management field. He later returned to education as an administrator.
