Gary Gubner had the following podium finishes at major championships: 3rd in the 1962 World Championships Unlimited class (497.5 kg); 2nd in the 1965 World Championships Unlimited class (545.0 kg). He was US National Champion in Unlimited in 1966. Gubner was also an excellent shot putter and attempted to make the 1964 Olympic team in both track & field and weightlifting, but finished fifth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the shot put. He had won the 1962 AAU Championship in the shot put, and was 2nd ranked on the 1962 world list with 19.78. In 1962 he set three world indoor records in the shot put, including his personal best of 19.80. As a shot putter Gubner also won the 1963-64 NCAA titles, and was second at the 1962 NCAAs.
