Biographie

Fritz Schmidt played 146 international hockey (field) matches for West Germany from 1963 to 1976. With the West German team he won the 1970 European title and a silver medal in 1974. He also received two bronze medals at the 1973 and 1975 World Championships. Schmidt trained as a baker and pastry cook and managed several stores in his hometown of Rüsselsheim. Later he turned to golf and the renovation of classic cars.

Schmidt competed at three Olympic Games, winning gold in 1972. In Mexico City he finished fourth in 1968, losing the bronze medal match against India, 2-1. In 1968 East and West Germany played their only international match in a preliminary round, with West Germany winning 3-2. At Montréal in 1976 the team placed fifth. Domestically he played with Rüsselsheimer RK, and helped them win West German titles in 1968, 1971, 1975, 1977, and 1978. In 1973, 1976 and 1979 the team also won the indoor championships.
