Edward Shumaker was a well-known pistol shooter when, in 1931, he saw a rifle shooting club practicing at a pig barn in Cadiz, Ohio. He thought it looked easy and quickly became an expert, making the 1932 US Olympic team in small-bore rifle. Shumaker served in World War I in the medical corps. He later became a dentist, and practiced dentistry for many years in Scio, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio Dental Association and the American Legion, and was also a Mason and Shriner.
