Larson was named an All-American in 21 events during his college career. He broke through internationally at the 1979 Pan American Games, winning a silver medal in the 200 freestyle and a gold in the 4x200 relay. Larson made the 1980 US Olympic team but was unable to compete because of the US-led boycott. He competed at the 1983 Pan American Games, winning another gold medal in the 4x200 free relay.
