Biographie

Dagmar Rom won gold medals in the slalom and giant slalom at the 1950 World Championships, and was expected to be a favorite in both events at the 1952 Winter Olympics. Rom was Austrian Sportswoman of the Year in 1950. However, after the 1950 ski season, Rom and her boyfriend opened a shop in Seefeld and she appeared in a movie, “Nacht am Mont Blanc,” taking off the 1950-51 season. She came back for the 1952 Winter Olympics, where she came away with a disappointing silver medal in giant slalom, and struggled badly in slalom in her only Winter Olympics.

Rom first won FIS races in 1947 with victories in downhill, slalom and combined at Davos. She was also Austrian downhill champion in 1947. She made the 1948 Austrian Olympic team but tore a ligament in her knee in training and could not compete. She was 1952 Austrian Champion in both slalom and giant slalom. But she left racing again after 1952, getting married and having a child, only to return for the 1954-55 season, but her performances that year did not make her an Olympic contender and she retired for good in 1955. She later did some work in Austrian television in the 1960s in the series “Mario” in which she starred alongside her son.
